Overly soft sleep surfaces are a risk for SUDI/SIDS - we reduce the risk!

Mountain Buggy is ahead of the game by already passing the sleep surfaces test for firmness. The method which will soon be introduced to identify hazardous softness in a sleep surface.

A recent study revealed an association between infant mortality and overly soft sleep surfaces being a risk factor for Sudden Unexpected Death of Infant (SUDI), also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). A firm mattress reduces the risk of an infant's breathing being obstructed if they roll face down. Experts recommend that infants sleep on their back with their face up, however as parents will know, they don’t always stay in this position. The new standard is being introduced in New Zealand and Australia to address the association between mattress firmness and the risk of SUDI/SIDS.

For many parents the message is loud and clear from experts, a firm well-fitted mattress is a key safe sleeping practice. However the appropriate ‘firmness’ has not been specified until now.

The new standard, AS/NZS 8811.1:2013, specifies a method for testing the firmness for where an infant is reasonably expected to sleep. This includes mattresses in carrycots and portacots, and stroller liners. We’re proud to say that the Mountain Buggy products tested have passed with flying colours. This offers peace of mind to parents that we are doing our part to reduce the risk of SUDI/SIDS.
