Infant vs convertible car seats

June 2026

If you’re preparing for a baby, one of the biggest decisions is how you want to travel in those early months, especially the first trip home from hospital – you need to have your car seat set up in your vehicle in order to head home safely. Both infant and convertible car seats are safe newborn-ready options, but they’re designed for very different lifestyles.

What is an infant car seat?

Think of an infant car seat as a convenient “carry-me-everywhere” solution for the newborn stage, designed to support flexibility and reduce disruption.

Sometimes referred to as a capsule, an infant car seat sits in a rear facing position the entire time in your vehicle and is designed to be lightweight and portable, offering flexibility and ease. Without disturbing your child while they rest, you can easily lift the seat with them still inside, moving it from the car and onto your buggy (creating a travel system), or carrying it indoors without interrupting their rest during those early, precious months.

Many infant car seats come with or are compatible with a fixed base that stays installed in your car, allowing you to simply click the seat in and out without reinstalling or rerouting vehicle seatbelts each time. This delivers ultimate peace of mind when getting ready for your car journey.

Some car seats offer Extended Rear Facing which goes into toddler years. Bear in mind that as your child grows, though they can still rear face in the car, they may be too big to transfer onto the buggy, still in the car seat. Refer to your car seat’s instructions.

✅ lightweight, portable ease in the car or on the buggy for your newborn.

What is a convertible car seat?

A convertible car seat is designed to stay installed in your vehicle AND grow with your child - a single seat lasting from birth up to 10 years (in some cases).

It begins in a rear-facing position for newborns, then it can convert into a forward-facing seat as your child gets older. Some convertible models can even convert further into the final stage car seat for the older child, utilising the vehicle seat belt in booster mode.

While it doesn’t offer the portability of an infant car seat, it provides excellent long-term value, with one seat covering multiple stages of development. For many families, a convertible car seat makes a practical, sustainable and cost-effective option.

✅ stays in the car and offers years of life from rear facing for newborn to forward facing for toddler years.

What’s the difference between them?

Simply put:

An infant car seat is designed for lifting and carrying convenience in the early months (or years, depending on if it offers Extended Rear Facing).

A convertible car seat is designed for long-term in the car only, use as your child grows – can rear AND forward face.

Visually it’s super easy to tell apart – an infant car seat always has a carry handle, convertibles do not!

Both are safe from birth. The difference is how you want to use them day to day.

Key decision factors to consider

Choosing between the two usually comes down to lifestyle:

  • Want to move baby easily between car and buggy, and use for frequent outings, short trips?
    ✅ Infant car seat.
  • Budget is key so need a seat that stays in the car, and does it all from birth to toddler years?
    ✅ Convertible car seat.

There’s no right or wrong choice. The best car seat is the one that fits your lifestyle, your vehicle, and one that you feel confident using correctly every day.
